I’ve felt like crap these past couple of days, more so than usual. Yesterday I could hardy stay awake all day, felt thisclose to throwing up at the thought of food, but didn’t. Today I went to the clinic downstairs, and was told my symptoms were related to the problem I’m having with my liver. As it also turns out,, I’m running a low fever, and could have the flu. All I know is, I feel rotten.
(t’s really cutting into my writing time. I signed up for mini_nanowrimo and have barely managed the 100 words a day. I’m not feeling especially sanguine about my writing today. Anyway. Yesterday I saw a really awful review of a story of mine. It wasn’t completely unexpected, the reviewer often has harsh words. But I wasn’t anticipating the part where my story is apparently offensive to disabled people Anyone who knows me knows that isn’t my style.

I'll only say this opening paragraph once for people who have turned tried hatred of the Yankees into annoying references... The 2009 New York Yankees are the world champions of baseball because, if for no other reason than this, they are the best team in the Bigs. Now I know what the anyone-but-the-Yank-mes crowd is thinking: "Of course they're the best team in baseball, D. They're the best team that money could buy. And that's why they symbolize everything wrong with the game." Not so fast, friends. Remember the 1997 Florida Marlins? Now in retrospect, that was one screwed-up club. They won the Series in one of the longest and possibly greatest postseason games to ever be played, and the Wayne Huizenga, who's best known as the dude who founded Blockbuster Video and then sold it to Viacom for a king's ransom. The end result was one of the largest closeout clearance sales in the history of Major League Baseball. From the Wikipedia article: • Following the World Series victory, Huizenga dismantled the team, claiming financial losses despite winning the World Series. He traded most of the club's best players in one of the biggest fire sales in sports history; one so infamous, it has come to epitomize the term "fire sale" in the baseball world. The first deal came days after the World Series, when outfieldler Moisés Alou was traded to the Houston Astros for pitchers. The last would come about a year later, ending the dismantling of the 1997 World Series champs." If you recall, they went from '97 champs to '98 chumps. So before you go saying how horrible I, my three of my best friends, and my uncle are for being members of Yankee nation and how we're all going to Special Hell for it, just remember... At least we didn't throw good money after bad one year after taking it all the way. Posted via LiveJournal.app.

I just received word from RightStuf.com that my order shipped.
Which order, you ask?
Why, I'm preparing myself... for the Dragon Ball Z... DRAGON BOX!!! You know, the one that contains the complete opening and closing credits and original next episode previews -- HOW 'BOUT THAT?! That's right, the Dragon Box will be MINE! (and yours, Earthling....)
Yeah, I'm quoting that epic Otakon Dragon Box promo. It's funny, dammit!
Will a remake of "Earth's Last Hope" be in the works? We'll find out soon.....

Well, fuck. For every 2 people that voted the right way, there were 3 more that voted the wrong way. It was unfortunate, but with a candidate that tried to play to the older voters instead of focusing on the people that turned out in droves last year -- the young -- Virginia voted 60/40 for McDonnell/Bolling/Cooch for Governor, Lt. Governor, and Atty. General. In addition, Democratic challengers in Virginia Beach for Sherrif and Commonwealth's Attorney were soundly defeated.
And now, the horse race for District 21 is ever so closer again. Incumbent (and good guy) Bobby Mathieson was holding on to a paper-thin lead, going back and forth allnight with challenger Ron Villanueva. Last I checked, Mathieson was ahead 44 votes. Now, he is trailing by SIXTEEN votes. Here's hoping for a recount, or that the provisional votes will be in Mathieson's favor, but honestly, it doesn't look good.
This is indeed a sad day for all Blue Virginians today.

Hey Virginia Voters! Do not fall for McDonnell's empty plans to pay the transportation bill for this state with no way for him to pay for it!
Vote CREIGH DEEDS, JODY WAGNER, and STEVE SHANNON today!
(And re-elect Bobby Matheison in District 21!)

I posted about this in a more rambly way yesterday, but thought I would do so again in hopes of getting some expertise from you all. I need to buy something to cool my apartment. Does anyone have experiences with portable air conditioners, evaporative coolers, or even really good fans? My issue is that I don't think I can utilize a window for exhaust purposes or draining. I would also consider an air/heat unit, because I have no confidence that the problems I am having with being too hot won't be similar when it is the dead of winter and it gets too cold.

Apparently there's a lot of stuff happening this year at Neko. In addition, Breeders' Cup weekend is also this weekend, but I'm only going to play those races on Saturday. I'll probably be walking around with a laptop trying to watch the races and doing handicapping in between panels.... ( Races, in case anybody cared... )
This should be a good weekend. :)

During a recent Stickam session, gohanvox mentioned that I pretty much geek out on DBZ. I might be knowledgeable about DBZ (and DB -- but less so for DBGT), but that's mostly thanks to vegettoex and the gang at Daizenshuu EX and their podcast. Again, once upon a time, I used to hate -- HATE -- Dragon Ball Z for no apparent reason than just something to make fun of because it was popular. Now, I like the show a lot for what it is, what it represents, and what it *can* represent. I'm not saying that I could write a college thesis as to why DBZ can be a metaphor for life/death/the economy or whatever, but for a kids' show, there's lots of stuff you begin to appreciate when you get past all the powerups and stalling and five-minutes-that-turns-into-thirteen-episodes.
Neko (or any anime convention, really) is good in that I can geek out about DBZ as much as I feel like, and not get weird looks from everyone. Well, at least I would hope. gohanvox is coming, and I don't want to scare him or anything, but I'm sure to get my Z on next weekend. :)

Happy Half-Priced Candy Day Oh My God, it's Nano! Huh, did I remember to set my clock back day?
I can't believe it's been 11 days since I last posted (and that was just a Santa letter). Actually, I guess I can, it's easy for me to get into a quiet mode, or not drum up the energy to post even though I've got things to say. I'm that way about talking, too. If I'm alone, after a while the sound of my own voice (say, when I have to call someone) makes me a little nervous. Phone wise, I've always had this thing where I am uncomfortable talking when someone else is in the room with me.
I have no hopes of managing a real nanowrimo, but am attempting both mini_nanowrimo (100 words a day) and wrisomifu (ten minutes of writing each day), which perhaps this year I can actually do.
Fannish things I am doing /have done today: ponder what I will write for the Due South seekrit Santa, the SGA one, and my Due South six degrees Big Bang.
I also played an unexpected round of Canadian actor bingo by channel surfing to a Lifetime movie with CKR and Hugh Dillon. Murder in her Mind, from 2008 apparently. I'd not heard of it, and suspect it might have been done a little earlier for some Canadian entity, but sold to Lifetme.
Now I'm watching (or half watching as I write) one of those 'a band plays while ice skaters perform' shows on NBC. The 'band' being the Back Street Boys, who look pretty old. I was never a boy-bander, but know their stuff because everyone does, and have read a bit through fannish osmosis. Some of the acts are skating to recorded stuff, the best of which so far has been the Glee version of Don't Stop Believing, which makes it all a layered performance in a weird way. Journey (and all the history the original brings to mind) plus skaters interpretation plus Glee version (and picturing that in my head, along with my own chorus experiences back in high school) plus Glee fandom = a big collage of singing and skating and kitsch.
Getting away from the fandom/writing stuff, sorry, it's been a frustrating week. As I've mentioned, my building is undergoing a lot of renovations, and at some future unknown date I will have to move to another apartment, most likely up a floor. Instead of doing everything at once, so we can just move into an updated place, the fucked up government funding has meant that different jobs must be done at different deadlines. Now we are in the middle of getting air conditioning/heating units, and separately, new toilets. The A/C stuff was supposed to have been finished by the 8th of October, and the toilets were supposed to have taken two weeks or less, and be done a few weeks ago. They have not started on the toilets yet.
The a/c on the other hand, is a major source of stress. I'll put the TLlDR behind a cut, but the gist of it is, they lied to us about our ability to control our own apartments' temperatures, and I am already having serious problems.
( The longer version )
At this point, I am pricing portable air conditioners, and pondering whether there's a strong enough fan out there for me. The problem with the portable a/c units is that I don't know what kind of window access I will have, if any, when the renovations are done. If I have to vent something out a window, it may not be possible. At very least, I may not be able to open it, rather than taping something up to a screen.
Have any of you had experience with portable a/c? Any advice?

In happier news, on Friday I did a visit to Dover Downs. As I was playing, apparently I started riding the bankroll roller coaster. I started with $240, and went up for a big on a Crown of Egypt machine. Then I nearly lost it on a Cash King machine. Went to the Monopoly Big Event and got most of it back. Then went to the blackjack tables and lost about half. Then went to the eBay machines and hit a lucky bonus round, getting me up to about $400. Then I gave half of it back on a couple other machines. Then I went to a Cashola machine - a Treasures of Avalon machine - and I hit the bonus round. I got a few lucky re-triggers, and worked my way up to a 5x multiplier, and then hit for $580. When I left, I had $985 in my wallet.
I think the casino was trying to tell me something..... the money I win in the casino is mine. Keep the money you win before we decide to take it all back!
It's a lot like that old story about the guy who was drowning in the sea and decided not to get on the boats because "God will save me" -- and when he ends up in Heaven after drowning, the guy says, "What happened, God? I thought you were going to save me!" God replied, "Didn't you get the messages I left you? I sent out three boats for you!"
Casinos are fun, but they're still a war zone. If you don't quit while you're ahead, you'll be eaten alive. Better to leave with a fortune than with famine.

The day was supposed to be spent staving off trick-or-treaters (I don't have any candy, and Q just doesn't like kids of a certain age) by going to the new Millstone 14 and watching "Astro Boy". Sleep just seemed like a better option all around.
Now perhaps a movie marathon is in order. All I have are the original "Blood: The Last Vampire" and the Resident Evil Trilogy. Four movies.... yeah, that works.
While we're on the subject of scary films... The Saw series... They really should've stopped at 3.
Also went to the Eve Ball yesterday. Not many people figured out I was the Tenth Doctor (Who). Had a great time with an old friend who invited me there. Pictures are forthcoming, but if you've watched the RDU local news (both ABC11 and a lady from News 14 were there... I think she asked me who I was), then you've seen what it was about. It was good fun for a good cause. In the back of my mind, I thought, "Yeah, you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us."
Good job.
